In the 51st minute, Diego Maradona played the ball towards Jorge Valdano near the edge of England's penalty area and continued his run. Steve Hodge sent the loose ball back towards goalkeeper Peter Shilton. Maradona jumped with Shilton, raised his left arm and directed the ball into the unguarded net. England's players protested immediately.
Referee Ali Bin Nasser awarded the goal. Argentina took a 1–0 lead and eventually won the quarter-final 2–1. The match officials did not have a video review system available at the 1986 tournament.
